The Mercat Cross was an important symbol of the townโ€™s prosperity, showing its right to holdย  markets and fairs.

The first mention of a Market Cross at Dunfermline occurs in the Burgh Records under date 1499, but there can be little doubt that there was one as early as 1396, when the Burgh received its charter from the abbot.

Dunfermlineโ€™s Mercat Cross has been replaced, restored and moved several times over the centuries before returning to its current location. The present cross is a replacement erected by public subscription in 1868.

The Cross is due to undergo restoration again soon to replace the Unicorn which sits on top of the structure.
